Skardu, a town in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of northern Pakistan, is traversed by the Indus River. Skardu is surrounded by massive mountains, including the Karakoram Range, and is located at an elevation of 2,400 meters (7,999 feet) above sea level.
Skardu has extremely low winter time temperatures, with average lows between -12°C and -7°C (10°F to 19°F) and average highs between -2°C and 2°C (28°F to 35°F) in December and January. In the winter, the river may freeze over, resulting in an idyllic scene of mountains covered in snow and ice formations on the water.
However, it’s important to keep in mind that getting to Skardu in the winter can be difficult because of the copious amounts of snowfall and the lack of accessible transportation. To prevent hypothermia and other health problems brought on by the cold, it is also crucial to take precautions. If you do intend to visit Skardu during the winter, make sure to prepare by dressing appropriately and researching the weather and driving conditions.
